What to expect…
This is where it all begins. The Open Water certification provides the proper training and orientation for new divers to learn how to nagivate the world beneath. PADI is how the world learns to dive. Millions have come before you and millions will follow. The Open Water course is a long establish certification which fosters a love for marine life and the environment surrounding it.
The PADI Open Water course is comprised of three main stages. First, students complete the classroom portion of their certification. Then, students complete their pool sessions, and finally students carry out their open water dives.
CLASSROOM
Classroom hours vary, but in general, a student may complete the classroom session in five to eight hours. Classroom sessions include informational videos, class discussions, and written examinations.
POOL SESSIONS
During the pool session, students complete a skin diving and swimming test. They also learn various techniques for clearing their snorkels, entering the water, and practice clearing techniques. The pool session also includes a swim test to ensure all scuba candidates are proficient swimmers.
During the pool sessions, students become familiar with the scuba unit. They learn how it operates and how it is assembled. Students get properly fitted and weighted and ultimately enter the pool in shallow water.
Gradually, students are moved to water "too deep to stand on" and they complete various scuba skills during what is is known as their confined water dives.
OPEN WATER DIVES
Open water dives mirror the confined water divers held in the pool. Diver candidates repeat the pool skill in open water and at greater depths. Students also learn to remove and replace their equipment at the surface and at depth. The final open water dive is almost always a "fun dive" where divers learn to improve their buoyancy and their pitch as they move about the water column.
